The Fuzzy baby bird is part of my new pattern collection, featured in the recently published Estonian book. The pattern is now available in my webshop in both English and Dutch, with a Spanish translation coming soon.
This baby bird design came together effortlessly — I got it right on the first try! I made the initial sample in dark gray and immediately knew there wasn’t much to adjust. The light gray version is the one featured in the book.
The key to this design is the yarn. I wanted the bird to resemble a baby bird before its feathers fully develop, and I’m thrilled with how the yarn brought that idea to life.
While there are fuzzy, furry yarns on the market, I find them frustrating to work with since it’s nearly impossible to see the stitches. My trick is to combine a fuzzy yarn (like boucle) with regular wool. You still get the texture, but it’s much easier to see the stitches. That’s my little secret I just told you!
As always, I couldn’t resist adding fabric to the design. The cute, flower-printed patches under the wings turned out just perfect.
Designing those adorable legs was a joy as well.
All in all, she’s simple but charming. I think this bird makes the perfect gift for a newborn. In fact, I’ve already made a special white one for a new family member my sis is expecting in December.
