Recently, I discovered Montessori for myself, and that’s how these cute and Colorful Amigurumi Fish for a baby play gym were born.
The idea came from my sister, who has a baby girl. She asked me to make some hanging toys for the baby gym and introduced me to Montessori pedagogy.
They say that in the first few weeks after birth, babies see contrasts rather than colors, which is why black-and-white toys work best. The first set I made for little Paula was black and white, inspired by the Montessori Munari concept.
But babies grow so fast! Soon, Paula needed a new and more colorful set of hanging toys – so the fish were born.
Made in primary colors – blue, red, and yellow – these fish stimulate the babies above 6 weeks just to the right extent.
There are two options for the fish: you can make them in solid colors or, as an alternative, create striped fish. The pattern works beautifully both ways.
Another special feature of these toys is the crinkle material inside. It adds a soft sound when squeezed, without turning them into rattles – just a gentle, engaging crinkle for little hands to explore.
I am super happy to share this pattern with you today! It clearly shows that amigurumi isn’t just about making cuddly toys – you can also crochet toys that are educational, sweet, and handmade with love.
I decided to release the fish pattern first, but don’t worry – I’m working on the black-and-white set too! After making a few adjustments, I’ll start writing the pattern for that one as well.
Some facts about this new pattern you might want to know:
- The Colorful Amigurumi Fish pattern is suitable for an intermediate skill level.
- It’s a NO-SEW pattern, which I know many of you will appreciate!
- Each fish takes me about one hour to complete, so making a set of three takes just three hours – meaning you can create a beautiful baby gift in just one evening! 😊
