CROCHET LIGHTNING MCQUEEN HAT

Crochet Lightning McQueen Hat for kids who still remember the cartoon!
You will get a soft and comfy hat when using a yarn made of mixtures of cotton. In addition to that you need to crochet 7 applications.
The hat made according to this pattern fits the head approx 49-51 cm (19.3-20.1 in). You will get a smaller or larger hat when increasing or decreasing the number of stitches. You may add more depth when needed with adding some more rows to the hat.
Supplies:
- yarn for the hat: I used aran (10 ply) weight Red Heart Eco-Cotton Blend (100 g / 156 m) – red (approx 2/3 skein), a little bit of white and blue
- crochet hook 4 mm
- yarn for the applications: I used sport (5 ply) weight Steinbach Wolle Capri (50 g / 125 m) – white, blue, black, yellow
- crochet hook 3.5 mm
Size: fits the head approx 49-51 cm (19.3-20.1 in)

Stitches and abbreviations (US crochet terms):
Slip stitch (sl st), chain (ch), single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), increase (inc), decrease (dec), stitch (st), stitches (sts), repeat (rep)
About the pattern:
- The hat is worked in continuous rounds.
- The appliques are worked in closed rounds or back and forth rows.
- Use a stitch marker and place it in the first stitch of the round to mark the beginning of it.
- Leave each piece a long yarn tail for sewing.
HAT
Crochet spirally from top down. Use red yarn and 4 mm crochet hook.
1: Ch 2, work 7 sc in the second st from hook (7)
2-11: Inc 7 sts equally spaced on each round, until you get 77 sc (77)
12-36: Sc in each st around
37: Use white yarn. Sc in each st around
38: Use blue yarn. Sc in each st around
Sl st in next st. Cut the yarn and weave in ends.
APPLICATIONS
All applications are made with 3.5 mm crochet hook. Leave each piece a long yarn tail for sewing.
FRONT WINDOW
1: Use white yarn. Ch 31. Sc in each st starting with the second st from hook (30)
2-9: Turn, ch 1. Sc in the same st, sc2tog, sc in each st across (by the end of round 9 you should have 22 sts left)
10-12: Turn, ch 1. Sc in each of next 11 sts (the rest of the sts are left unworked)
Turn, ch 1. Border the piece with sc. Sl st in the first sc.
EYE (make 2)
Use blue yarn. Ch 3. 12 dc in the third st from hook, sl st in the first st (12)
PUPIL (make 2)
Use black yarn. Ch 2. 8 sc in the second st from hook, sl st in the first st (8)
Sew the pupil onto the eye. Find a proper place for the eyes on the front window and sew them on.
Sew the front window to the hat.
BOLT (make 2)
Use yellow yarn. Ch 25. Dc in the third st from hook, dc in next st, hdc in next 5 sts, sc in next 12 sts, sl st in next 4 sts.
Using the pins attach the strips with the shape of the bolts of lightning to the hat and sew them on.
