This is an amigurumi magic ring tutorial. It`s also called adjustable loop or magic circle. Magic ring is something you`ll need when crocheting in the round, for example when making amigurumi toys or starting a hat at the top of the head. It`s a way to start the pieces with the best quality and perfection, without leaving a hole on the top of the piece. I´ll show you a way to achieve it.
1. Make a loop at about 10 cm from the end of the yarn so that the shorter yarn tail runs underneath the longer one.
2.Insert the crochet hook through the loop, from front to back. Grab the longer yarn tail and bring back through the loop.
3. Make 1 chain stitch.
4. You are now ready to crochet the stitches of the first round. In amigurumi it`s usually 6 single crochet. Crochet the stitches into the ring.
5. After finishing the stitches of the first round grab the shorter yarn tail and pull the ring tightly together.
And the magic has happened! You`ll have the perfect start for the piece.

Hi! If magic ring is not for you, try starting with chain 2 method. Find tutorial here.
Thank you so much for this tutorial on how to do the magic ring. After watching numerous YouTube tutorials on this subject I tried making magic rings with no success. I purchased your pattern for the Ballerina Mouse which included the link to your home page & I’m now able to make the magic ring without any problems. As this is my first attempt at an Amigurumi toy I appreciate all the tips & tutorials you’ve created and I’ve learned so much.
Thanks, Sue! This is the best feedback I could wish for. I´m so happy you shared this with me and the rest of the blog readers.
I love your projects and I am sort of new to Knit/Crochet. I am attempting to make your cute “funny Bunny” for my grand daughter. After I have made a magic ring (6 sc) do I slip stitch to the first stitch to connect the rows or always chain 1 at the finish of the round? I apologize if this is an obvious question, I really want to learn this. Thank you for sharing your beautiful work and allowing us to use your patterns.

Hello, Carla! It`s wonderful to meet you here.
In amigurumi we work in the round so you don`t need to join rows or chain in the beginning of the new one. Start the new round without doing anything!
Thank you so much for your quick answer. I am just about half-way finished and quite pleased with the way it is turning out..I just have to perfect the tension on my stitches. I can’t wait to make another one of your patterns, they are all so darn cute!
I´m happy to hear things are working out great!
