I made this cute puppy rattle from an unfinished toy, which was missing the limbs. I had it made a few years ago and the problem was that I didn`t have the beige yarn left to complete it. But I loved his cute face and was unhappy to simply through it away. So I got this idea of turning it into a rattle. I did have some leftover of the blue shades so I decided to use these in this project.
On the photos below you can see how it looked like in the beginning.
Here`s what I did:
- I disconnected the head from the body. Then removed a bit of stuffing from the head, inserted a small metal bell in it and put the stuffing back.
2. I ripped off most of the body and made a new handle for the rattle.
Here`s the guide for my new handle (sc = single crochet):
1: Work 6 sc in a magic ring [6]
2: Work 2 sc in each st around [12]
3: (Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st) rep 6 times [18]
4: (Sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st) rep 6 times [24]
5: (Sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st) rep 6 times [30]
6-8: Sc in each st around
9:Â (Sc in each of next 3 sts, sc2tog) rep 6 times [24]
10-11: Sc in each st around
12:Â (Sc in each of next 2 sts, sc2tog) rep 6 times [18]
Here I started creating stripes with contrasting colors.
13-33: Sc in each st around
It`s important to keep in mind that the head and body should end up with the same amount of stitches. Then you can easily sew them together.
3. I finished the rattle by sewing the head to the handle.
If you are lacking ideas then here are some free head versions for you: teddy bear head, pig head, cat head, bunny head and frog head. Be my guest to use them!

Achei muito lindo. Que tipo de fio você usa?
I read the directions for the puppy rattle head, I think there is an error when going from 24 to 36 stitches. if you do the pattern as written 6 times repeat, you only get to 30 stitches, you would either have to do it 8 times or after the 4 sc you would 2 sc in each of the next 2 stitches. I’m not sure which way it should be.
Hi! I cannot locate the mistake. On round 5 of the head you increase to 30 stitches, on round 6 you increase to 36.
Great idea to make a rattle of this cute puppy head. He has a sweet, bit funny look on his face. Thanks for this lovely pattern.
Have a wondeful weekend, Margaret
Thanks, Margaret! I´m happy you like him.
