You will get a soft and comfy hat when using a yarn made of mixtures of cotton. In addition to that you need to crochet 7 applications. The hat made according to this pattern fits the head approx 49-51 cm. You will get a smaller or larger hat when increasing or decreasing the number of stitches. You may add more depth when needed with adding some more rows to the hat.
– yarn for the hat: Red Heart Eco-Cotton Blend (100g = 156m) – red (approx 2/3 skein), a little bit of white and blue
– crochet hook 4 mm
– yarn for the applications: Steinbach Wolle Capri (50g = 125m) – white, blue, black, yellow
– crochet hook 3,5 mm
sl st – slip stitch, ch – chain, sc – single crochet, hdc – half double crochet, inc – increase, dec – decrease, st(s) – stitch(es), rep – repeat
Crochet spirally from top down.
Take the RED color and crochet hook 4.
1: Ch 2. 7 sc in the second st from hook.
2-11: inc 7 sts equally spaced on each row, until you get 77 sc.
12-22: Sc in each st around
23: WHITE, 1 sc in each st around
24: BLUE, 1 sc in each st around
Sl st in next st. Cut the yarn and weave in ends.
All applications are made with crochet hook 3,5.
Leave every detail a long yarn for sewing them onto the hat later on.
1: Take WHITE color and ch 31. Sc in each st starting with the second st from hook = 30 sc
2-9: Turn, ch 1. Sc in the same st, sc2tog, sc in each st across (by the end of row 9 you should have 22 sts left)
10-12: Turn, ch 1. Sc in each of next 11 sts (rest of the sts are left out at the moment)
Turn, ch 1. Border the piece with sc. Sl st in the first sc.
Eye (make 2)
Take LIGHT BLUE and ch 3.
12 dc in the third st from hook. Sl st in the first st.
Pupil (make 2)
Take BLACK and ch 2.
8 sc in the second st from hook. Sl st in the first st.
Sew the pupil onto the eye. Find a proper place for the eyes on the front window and sew them on.
Sew the front window to the hat.
Bolt (make 2)
Take YELLOW and ch 25.
Dc in the third st from hook, dc in the next st. Hdc in the next 5 sts, sc in the next 12 sts, sl st in the next 4 sts.
Using the pins attach the strips with the shape of the bolts of lightning to the hat and sew them on.
